SAIC-GM’s new Buick GL8 is industry’s first plug-in hybrid MPV with 5C battery, company says

On July 15, Buick teased its new GL8 Luzun MPV equipped with an upgraded 5C 34.8 kWh ternary lithium battery pack produced under the SAIC-GM joint venture in China. The new car is also the industry’s first plug-in hybrid MPV to feature a 5C battery, according to the official.

The CLTC pure electric range is 202 km, the comprehensive range is 1,450 km, and the time to recharge the battery from 30% to 80% is 15 minutes.

For reference, the current model has four trims on sale, equipped with lithium iron phosphate battery packs, and a price range of 359,900 – 419,900 yuan (50,170 – 58,540 USD). It has a CLTC pure electric range of 138 km and a comprehensive range of 1,370 km.

Judging from the declaration images, the exterior design of the new Buick GL8 Luzun is consistent with the current model. The large trapezoidal grille on the front face is supplemented by chrome decoration, combined with sharp headlights. The body size also remains unchanged: 5219/1878/1807 mm, and the wheelbase is 3088 mm.

Power comes from a 1.5T turbocharged engine and an electric motor, with the maximum power of the engine being 132 kW (177 hp) and the maximum power of the motor being 160 kW (215 hp). The declaration information also showed a ternary lithium battery option which may launch in the future.

In the first six months of 2025, the Buick GL8 series sold more than 58,340 units, with the GL8 Lushang and GL8 Luzun accounted for 40% of sales. In September last year, the 2,000,000th Buick GL8 rolled off the production line in China.

Furthermore, the Buick GL8 Luzun crowned the “Plug-in Hybrid MPV One-Year Retention Rate Champion” title with a value retention rate of 80.68% based on the “Automobile Retention Rate List in the First Half of 2025” created by the China Automobile Dealers Association.
